Benign Heart Tumor

This content is posted with the written permission of the patient and family.

This video highlights the surgical management of a large left atrial myxoma, nearly obstructing the mitral valve, along with an image of the 5.5 cm resected specimen and a brief interview with the patient.

The patient is 83 years old, now post-operative day 4, recovering well, and being discharged today to a rehabilitation facility.

Left atrial myxomas, while uncommon, can cause significant hemodynamic compromise and embolic risk. Timely diagnosis and definitive surgical excision remain the standard of care and can result in excellent outcomes, even in advanced age.

Cases like this reinforce the importance of vigilance, surgical precision, and coordinated perioperative care.
