Prediabetes is one of the most under-recognized and underappreciated health risks we face today.
More than one in three adults in the United States meets the criteria for prediabetes, yet the majority are unaware. By definition, it represents blood sugar levels that are elevated, but not yet in the range of Type 2 Diabetes. That distinction matters because this is the window where meaningful intervention can change the trajectory.
What makes prediabetes particularly important is that it is often silent. Patients feel well. There are no obvious symptoms. Yet metabolic changes are already underway, with early effects on the vascular system that can increase long-term risk of cardiovascular disease.
The encouraging reality is this: prediabetes is frequently reversible.
Modest, sustainable changesโweight management, regular physical activity, improved nutrition, and attention to sleepโcan significantly reduce progression to diabetes and improve overall health outcomes.
From a clinical and public health perspective, this is an opportunity. Early identification through routine screening, such as fasting glucose or Hemoglobin A1c, allows us to intervene before irreversible damage occurs.
As physicians and healthcare leaders, we should continue to emphasize prevention, patient education, and early engagement. For patients, the message is simple: know your numbers and take action early.
Prediabetes is not a diagnosis to fearโit is a chance to take control.
