There’s something new when it comes to cholesterol treatment: Lifendra.
Hi everyone, I’m Dr. Raymond Singer.
There has been an exciting new development in cardiovascular medicine. The FDA has approved Lifendra, also known as anlisotide, the first once-daily oral PCSK9 inhibitor for lowering LDL cholesterol, often called “bad” cholesterol.
How Effective Is Lifendra?
Clinical trials showed that Lifendra lowered LDL cholesterol by nearly 60% when added to existing cholesterol-lowering therapies. That’s an impressive reduction and is comparable to injectable PCSK9 inhibitors.
Who May Benefit?
Lifendra is intended for adults with high cholesterol, including those with inherited forms of high cholesterol, particularly patients who have not reached their LDL goals despite healthy lifestyle changes and statin therapy.
The Bottom Line
As a cardiac surgeon, I always remind my patients that lowering cholesterol is only one part of protecting your heart.
- Don’t smoke
- Exercise regularly
- Eat a heart-healthy diet
- Control blood pressure
- Manage diabetes
- Take medications consistently
Lifendra represents an exciting new option for patients who need additional LDL lowering and prefer taking a pill instead of injections. It is another step forward in preventing heart disease and helping people live longer, healthier lives.
I’m Dr. Raymond Singer. I hope this was helpful. Stay informed, take care of your heart, and I’ll see you next time.
