We are balancing rising costs, workforce challenges, regulatory pressures, and rapid innovation, all while being asked to improve access, quality, and outcomes. These are not abstract issues, they shape the care our patients receive every single day.
What I have learned over time is that the best decisions happen when physicians are part of the leadership conversation.
Not because physicians should lead alone, but because we bring a perspective that is difficult to replicate, one grounded in the realities of patient care, risk, and outcomes.
The most effective health systems are not built on hierarchy; they are built on alignment. When physicians and administrators work together with a shared focus on patients, quality, and sustainability, that is when healthcare performs at its best.
I have been fortunate to see this firsthand at Lehigh Valley Health Network and now at Jefferson Health, where strong physician leadership has helped shape that alignment.
As we look ahead, the challenges in healthcare will only grow more complex. Meeting them will require thoughtful collaboration, clear priorities, and a continued commitment to keeping patients at the center of every decision.
Physician leadership is not optional; it is essential.
