Conventional open-heart coronary artery bypass graft surgery via a sternotomy can be performed painlessly. This method remains the gold standard for left main and multi-vessel coronary artery disease, particularly in patients who have multiple risk factors and/or impaired heart function.
The derisive phrase “cracking the chest” is no longer applicable using today’s surgical and anesthetic techniques.
