Mitral valve prolapse occurs when the mitral valve leaflets do not close tightly. There are a variety of causes of this problem. Over time, a leaky mitral valve can cause enlargement of the heart which can lead to heart rhythm problems, such as atrial fibrillation. Mitral valve repair surgery remains the gold standard for correction of mitral valve prolapse. Recently, Jefferson Einstein Montgomery Hospital received a 3-Star Rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for quality outcomes in patients who require isolated mitral valve surgery.
