COVID Update – 5/2022

Over 82 million of us caught Covid-19 and/or one of its variants. Despite a lot of optimism due to the vaccines, and a return to normalcy, the virus continues to mutate and spread, causing continued concerns worldwide.
Here are the U.S. updates, reported today:

  • Reports of new coronavirus cases have doubled in the past month as Omicron subvariants have spread across the country.
  • Cases are increasing in all but seven states and territories, and in more than 10 states, the daily case average is twice as high today as it was two weeks ago. Some places, including Hawaii, Maine and Puerto Rico, have seen recent case counts approach or surpass the levels seen during last year’s Delta surge.
  • Hospitalizations are also on the rise, driven primarily by increases on the East Coast. Just over 19,000 people are in American hospitals with the coronavirus each day, an increase of 20 percent from two weeks ago.
  • The full impact of this surge is believed to be even greater than these numbers suggest. Since many infections go uncounted in official case reports, the roughly 73,000 cases currently announced each day likely capture only a portion of the true toll.
  • Coronavirus deaths in the United States have reached 1 million, though the good news is that the daily death reports are currently low.
  • Fewer than 400 deaths are being announced each day on average, down from more than 2,600 a day at the height of the Omicron surge. Let’s hope that this most important statistic continues to stabilize and improve.

We all have enjoyed getting back to work, and going to restaurants, theaters, and sporting events. Just keep in mind that this pandemic is not over and do the best you can to stay safe.

This should never have been about politics—shamefully it became political, and misinformation from all sides remains problematic. But now, Cable News has shifted to the War in Ukraine, Roe vs. Wade, inflation, crime, and the upcoming elections. The pandemic may not be making headings, but you need to stay informed!

So please remember that it’s just as important as ever try to keep up on the latest facts concerning coronavirus trends, treatments, and recommendations from reliable sources. I’ll continue to do my best to share the latest information and my observations.

Be well! Stay positive! But also stay safe!
