Unlike traditional methods that rely on static cold storage (putting the organ on ice), the OCS keeps the organ warm, perfused with blood, and functioning — closely mimicking conditions inside the human body.
In this example, a liver transplant is about to be performed. The donor liver is being protected and well-perfused with warm blood until the recipient is prepared for surgery.
This technique is being used at Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital (JEPH), one of the nation’s largest and most successful liver transplant programs.
