Calcium Scoring

As cardiovascular specialists, we’ve long relied on coronary artery calcium scoring as a valuable tool for risk stratification.
But we also recognize its limitations.

Calcium scoring identifies calcified plaque, yet it does not detect non-calcified, vulnerable plaque—the type that is often more unstable and more closely associated with acute coronary events.

Advances in imaging—and increasingly, artificial intelligence are helping us close that gap.

AI is rapidly transforming nearly every industry, and healthcare is no exception. In cardiovascular medicine, it is enhancing our ability to detect disease earlier, analyze complex data more precisely, and ultimately make better-informed clinical decisions.

One such innovation is 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗔𝗜, which uses coronary CT angiography combined with AI-driven analysis to provide a far more comprehensive assessment of coronary artery disease.

This technology allows us to better understand:

• Total plaque burden
• Plaque composition (calcified vs non-calcified)
• Distribution within the coronary tree
• Features associated with higher-risk lesions

This represents a meaningful step forward in our ability to detect and characterize coronary disease earlier and more precisely.
Regionally, Cardiology Consultants of Philadelphia (CCP) has been an early adopter of this technology.

I am proud to have a close working relationship with the CCP team, and together we collaborate on complex patients—integrating advanced imaging insights with surgical judgment to guide optimal care.

This type of partnership reflects where cardiovascular medicine is headed: More precise diagnostics with more collaborative decision-making, and a stronger focus on prevention before disease becomes symptomatic or catastrophic.

Calcium scoring remains an important starting point—but it is no longer the full story.

The future of heart care lies in seeing more, understanding more, and acting earlier.
