Vaping is often marketed as a “safer alternative” to traditional cigarettes. While that may be true in a narrow sense, it has unfortunately created a much more dangerous perception—that vaping is harmless.
It is not.
E-cigarettes expose users to nicotine, ultrafine particles, heavy metals, and a variety of toxic chemicals that can negatively impact both lung and cardiovascular health. We are seeing increasing cases of EVALI, a serious and sometimes life-threatening condition, particularly in younger patients.
From a cardiac perspective, nicotine is a potent stimulant. It raises heart rate and blood pressure, contributes to endothelial dysfunction, and may accelerate the development of cardiovascular disease.
What is especially concerning is how many individuals who vape have never smoked traditional cigarettes. This is not simply harm reduction, it is the introduction of new risk.
As physicians and healthcare leaders, we have a responsibility to provide clear, evidence-based education, particularly as long-term data continues to emerge.
If you are trying to quit smoking, there are safer, well-established strategies available. But if you have never smoked, the best decision is simple, do not start vaping.
