It takes a large team to make us one of the best heart and lung surgery programs in the country.
This team consists of cardiologists, anesthesiologists, pulmonologists, oncologists, and medical consultants from all disciplines. And, the team consists of nurses, nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists, physician assistants, perfusionists, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, physical therapists, and on and on. Finally, to keep it all together, it takes a crack team of hospital and practice administrators.

I’ve been so fortunate throughout my career to always be surrounded by incredible teams. Each chapter has been special in its own way, but I feel especially blessed right now with the team I get to work with every day.
To be back in my hometown, enjoying these final years of my career with such a talented and supportive group, is something I don’t take for granted.
Truly a blessing. Enjoying every moment.

Team-building starts with celebrating your team!
Healthcare is one of the most rewarding careers, but it is also one of the most demanding—especially in today’s environment. Long hours, high stakes, and emotional intensity can take a toll. That’s why creating a culture of collaboration, support, and positivity is not optional—it’s essential.
Today, we celebrated our ICU Nurse Practitioner, Laura Pinou, CRNP, on her birthday 🎂. Taking the time to acknowledge our team’s special occasions, whether it’s a birthday, work anniversary, or personal milestone, is more than just a kind gesture. It’s about:
✅ Building trust and connection
✅ Reminding each other that we’re more than our job titles
✅ Keeping morale high during stressful times
✅ Reinforcing that every person on the team matters
As leaders, we set the tone. A positive vibe is contagious, and when we choose to lead with encouragement and gratitude, our teams are better equipped to handle the challenges of healthcare.
Here’s to celebrating people, not just work—and to remembering that small moments of kindness are the foundation of a strong, resilient team.

“Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.”
In healthcare, we often look to the aviation industry to teach us about quality and patient safety. But, to learn how to be a high-performing, successful institution, we should look to team sports.
To win “championships,” it takes a special kind teamwork and intelligence —and it must start at the top, and transcend throughout the entire organization, at every level. Yes, we often call it the “culture” or “vision” of an organization. But, what does that mean in practical terms?
144 years of combined cardiac surgery experience! From right-to-left, Dr. Loganathan Parthipan, Chief of Cardiac Anesthesia (35 years); Mr. David Fried, Perfusion Professional (43 years); Dr. Mansoor Husain, Cardiac Anesthesologist (35 years); and me, Dr. Raymond Singer, Chief of Cardiac Surgery at Jefferson Einstein Montgomery Hospital (31 years). I guess I’m the youngster here!

March 2022 came in like a LION for Jefferson Einstein Montgomery Hospital! On March 1, 2022 the cardiothoracic surgery team successfully performed its 200th Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedure. The team gathered for a quick photo to mark the occasion.
Congratulations to my partner, Dr. Alexandra Tuluca, and the entire Structural Heat Team.
Thank You Perfusionists!
Silent Heroes
In every operating room across the country — from heart transplants to brain surgery, from pediatric miracles to complex oncologic procedures — there stands a quiet, steady presence beside the surgeon.
They are the scrub nurses and surgical technologists, the silent heroes who prepare every instrument, anticipate every move, and maintain calm precision when the stakes are highest.
They work shoulder to shoulder with us — sharing the same focus, the same fatigue, and the same mission: to save lives.
Their skill, dedication, and professionalism are nothing short of extraordinary. The success of every operation depends not just on the hands holding the scalpel, but on the many expert hands working in perfect harmony around the table.
So today, I want to shine a light on these unsung professionals who embody teamwork, excellence, and grace under pressure.
To all the scrub nurses and techs — thank you for your tireless commitment, your quiet courage, and your unwavering partnership. You are the heartbeat of the OR.
