Calcium Scoring

As cardiovascular specialists, we’ve long relied on coronary artery calcium scoring as a valuable tool for risk stratification.
But we also recognize its limitations.

Calcium scoring identifies calcified plaque, yet it does not detect non-calcified, vulnerable plaque—the type that is often more unstable and more closely associated with acute coronary events.

Advances in imaging—and increasingly, artificial intelligence are helping us close that gap.

AI is rapidly transforming nearly every industry, and healthcare is no exception. In cardiovascular medicine, it is enhancing our ability to detect disease earlier, analyze complex data more precisely, and ultimately make better-informed clinical decisions.

One such innovation is 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗔𝗜, which uses coronary CT angiography combined with AI-driven analysis to provide a far more comprehensive assessment of coronary artery disease.

This technology allows us to better understand:

• Total plaque burden
• Plaque composition (calcified vs non-calcified)
• Distribution within the coronary tree
• Features associated with higher-risk lesions

This represents a meaningful step forward in our ability to detect and characterize coronary disease earlier and more precisely.
Regionally, Cardiology Consultants of Philadelphia (CCP) has been an early adopter of this technology.

I am proud to have a close working relationship with the CCP team, and together we collaborate on complex patients—integrating advanced imaging insights with surgical judgment to guide optimal care.

This type of partnership reflects where cardiovascular medicine is headed: More precise diagnostics with more collaborative decision-making, and a stronger focus on prevention before disease becomes symptomatic or catastrophic.

Calcium scoring remains an important starting point—but it is no longer the full story.

The future of heart care lies in seeing more, understanding more, and acting earlier.

Patient Experience Matters as Much as the Operation

When people think about cardiac surgery, they often focus on the operation itself. But according to Dr. Raymond Singer, the future of heart surgery extends far beyond the operating room. From access to care and patient education to recovery and emotional support, the patient experience is becoming one of the most important measures of healthcare excellence.

I Used to Be an Athlete

After years of long hours, stress, and the demands of a surgical career, Dr. Raymond Singer realized he had drifted far from the healthy athlete he once was. Through consistent lifestyle changes, improved nutrition, exercise, emotional wellness, and the support of modern GLP-1 medications, he lost nearly 60 pounds and discovered that healthy aging begins one decision at a time.

How a Calcium Score Led to Bypass Surgery

When Michael learned his coronary calcium score was 775, he knew something wasn’t right. Although initial stress tests appeared normal, advanced cardiac imaging eventually uncovered severe coronary artery disease with critical blockages. Just 11 days after cardiac catheterization, he underwent successful double bypass surgery and was back home within days, experiencing minimal pain and a remarkable recovery.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Many people think obstructive sleep apnea is simply a nuisance because of loud snoring, but it can have serious consequences for heart health. Repeated interruptions in breathing place tremendous stress on the cardiovascular system and may increase the risk of high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation, heart failure, stroke, and heart attack. Learn the warning signs, risks, and treatment options that can improve both sleep quality and long-term health.

Even in the darkest seasons, faith is what keeps our feet moving when our hearts feel heavy. This I’ve learned…

Not every day will offer clarity. Not every chapter will feel fair. But the light that guides us forward is often born in the very moments that test us the most.

Keep going. Keep believing. Your breakthrough may be closer than you think.
