Do Not Ignore Shortness of Breath

Shortness of breath can stem from many causes, like anxiety, stress, anemia, asthma, COPD, respiratory infections, or blood clots to the lung, to name a few. However, shortness of breath can also be a sign of unsuspecting heart disease.

With permission from the patient to post, this 62-year-old man noticed increased shortness of breath while lifting heavy objects. He had no chest pain or weakness, just shortness of breath.
Fortunately, he sought medical attention with his PCP who referred him to a cardiologist for stress testing and an echocardiogram. These studies suspected extensive 3-vessel coronary artery disease which was then confirmed by cardiac catheterization at Jefferson Einstein Montgomery Hospital (JEMH).

As a result of finding life-threatening coronary blockages, he underwent urgent triple coronary artery bypass surgery at JEMH. Now, just 4 days after open-heart surgery, he is ready to be discharged to home. The surgery was performed using conventional on-pump cardioplegic arrest via a sternotomy. The patient describes absolutely no sternal pain and talks about his excellent care at Jefferson Einstein Montgomery Hospital.
