Dr. Ted Phillips

Dr. Phillips is a local boy, having grown up in Allentown. But that didn't stop him from attending Columbia University for college and Harvard Medical School, one of the finest medical schools in the country!

Dr. Phillips performed his General Surgery training at the Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City and then completed his Cardiothoracic Surgery fellowship at the Sanger Clinic in Charlotte, North Carolina.

In addition to being a talented surgeon, Dr. Phillips has a heart of gold, beloved by his patients and the staff. Dr. Phillips and I have been in practice together the longest at Lehigh Valley Hospital. Simply put, Ted is one of the most trusted team-players I have ever known.

Among his many skills, Dr. Phillips is an expert on Complex Coronary Artery Bypass procedures. Dr. Phillips uses the latest techniques for arterial grafting to ensure a long-term result. Indeed, Dr. Phillips has among the most experienced Coronary Bypass surgeon in the State with the best results.


Dr. James Wu

James Wu

Dr. Wu grew up in Queens, New York. He attended the University of Chicago where he majored in Chemistry. Dr. Wu then obtained his MD at the University of Chicago-Pritzker School of Medicine.

After medical school, Dr. Wu did his general surgery training at Stony Brook in New York and completed a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago.

During 2000-2001, Dr. Wu was the Chief Resident and Clinical Associate in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio. 

Dr. Wu is the Chief of our Section of Cardiac Surgery.  Dr. Wu is an innovative and talented academic surgeon who has brought many new technologies to our program.  Among them, Dr. Wu has led our TEVAR (Thoracic Endovascular Aneurysm Repair) program, Laser Lead Extraction for Pacemakers and ICDs, Minimally Invasive Surgery for Atrial Fibrillation, and our ECMO Mechanical Assist program for patients with life-threatening respiratory issues.


Dr. Sanjay Mehta

Dr. Mehta grew up in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, though he was born in Chicago.

He received his Bachelor of Science at the University of Pittsburgh where he majored in Chemical Engineering.

Dr. Mehta went to medical school at the Pennsylvania State University at the Hershey Medical Center and stayed there for his General Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery training. After completing his training, he stayed at Hershey and became their Surgical Director of Cardiac Transplantation.

Dr. Mehta is the Associate Chief of our Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Director of our Muhlenberg Campus program.  To say that Dr. Mehta is dedicated to Bethlehem and our Muhlenberg program is an understatement.  He is passionate about his hometown and is without a doubt the most experienced and talented heart surgeon serving the entire Northampton County.

Among Dr. Mehta's many skills, he helps lead our Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) program.  He is an expert on heart failure and critical care medicine.  In fact, whenever I have a question on a patient in the intensive care unit, my first phone call is to Dr. Mehta!


Dr. Misselbeck

Dr. Misselbeck grew up in Millville, New Jersey.

He received his Bachelor of Science at Drexel University in Philadelphia, majoring in Health Sciences.

Dr. Misselbeck went to medical school at the Ross University completed his General Surgery Residency at Lehigh Valley Health Network. It was during his training at Lehigh Valley Hospital that we met Dr. Misselbeck and it was clear from the start that he would be a perfect fit to our group.

After completing his surgical training at LVH, Dr. Misselbeck completed his fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Texas Heart Institute under the leadership of Dr. Denton Cooley.

Among his many other roles, Dr. Misselbeck is the Director our Ventricular Assist Device Program. Along with Dr. Mehta, Dr. Misselbeck is heading our our Center for Advanced Heart Failure and Mechanical Assist Device program.  This is one of the many collaborative programs that we have developed with our cardiology colleagues.  Indeed, Dr. Misselbeck is the first heart surgeon in our region to implant the HeartMate II VAD device, helping to put Lehigh Valley Hospital once again on the map as a nationally known quaternary heart hospital.


Dr. Vincent Lotano

Dr. Vincent LotanoDr. Lotano attended Hartwick College and completed his medical school degree at the UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

After medical school, Dr. Lotano received his general surgery training at the Cooper Hospital in Camden, New Jersey.  His cardiothoracic surgery fellowship was at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Dr. Lotano was in practice at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, primarily dedicated to their lung cancer and non-cardiac thoracic surgery program at Pennsylvania Hospital.

Dr. Lotano performs both cardiac and thoracic surgery and has been a welcomed, experienced addition to our team, currently heading up our lung cancer clinic and lung tumor board.

Dr. Kelly Wanamaker, MD

Dr. Wanamaker attended Old Dominion University where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychiatry and Nursing in 1997. She attended Drexel University College of Medicine where she earned her Doctor of Medicine in 2008.

She was a resident of Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA from 2008-2013.  After this time, she spent 2014-2016 at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston as a resident and fellow before joining us here.

The ESSA Heart and Vascular Institute at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Pocono offers the full breadth and depth of cardiovascular services and the highest level of cardiovascular care in Monroe County.

The Institute became the Pocono region’s first provider of open-heart surgery and interventional cardiac procedures 10 years ago under the leadership of Nche Zama, MD, PhD, MBA, a Harvard-trained, nationally recognized cardiothoracic surgeon who serves as Medical Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Today, the team includes interventional and noninterventional cardiologists (including Patricia Rylko, MD, Monroe County’s only female cardiologist), vascular surgeons and electrophysiologists, as well as a dedicated staff of certified registered nurse practitioners and physician assistants who specialize in caring for cardiac patients.

Dr. Raymond Singer

Dr. SingerI was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Cheltenham Township, Class of 1976!  I received a Bachelor of Science degree from Muhlenberg College at which time I fell in love with the Lehigh Valley.

I was privileged to attend medical school at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, truly one of the finest medical schools in the country.  I went on to residency training at Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, for both General Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Later in my career I obtained a Master of Medical Management degree from the H. John Heinz School of Public Policy and Management at the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  This allowed me to become a Certified Physician Executive (CPE) through the American College of Physician Executives.

In addition to enjoying a career in heart and lung surgery, I have developed leadership experience in Quality and Patient Safety, Health Care Reform, and Health Care Law --all of which are very important topics these days!
